Engaging dads
Getting Dads through the door!
We know that dads are as important to children’s lives as mums and we know that most dads share many interests and activities with their children. However, it is important to think about the barriers that may exist to dads engaging with groups or settings that promote a love of sharing books, stories, rhymes and songs. Addressing the following areas will help break down some of the barriers to dads' engagement:
Keeping dads involved
Once you have been successful in attracting dads to your event, session or group it is important that you create an environment that will make them want to stay involved. The following factors have been identified as ones that encourage dads to keep attending:
- The group needs to be inclusive and dads need to be made to feel welcome. Having fun will also make dads want to come back again.
- Children are great motivators – their pleasure and enjoyment will bring dads back. Dads will be proud of their children’s achievements and enjoy the special bond they share in the activities.
- Dads enjoy the camaraderie of other men and of spending time with other children. This can be built by encouraging regular attenders to support newer members or by having a social time during or after the session.
- Having a stake in the group. Encouraging suggestions and feedback from the dads, and acting on it, will help develop a sense of ownership and direction of the group.
- Showing that you value dads, the importance of their contribution to their children’s lives and above all their children.
